Tips-what to do if your car brakes fail

  1. Stay calm: Worrying could negatively impact your ability for clear thinking and calm decision-making. Breathe deeply and maintain your attention.
  2. Alert others: To let other drivers know there is a problem with your car, turn on your hazard lights. They will be better able to understand the issue and have a chance to respond appropriately as a result.
  3. Downshift gears: If you are driving a manual transmission vehicle, downshifting can help slow down your car by using engine braking. Shift to a lower gear gradually to slow down the vehicle’s speed.
  4. Use the emergency brake (parking brake): Pull up the emergency brake gradually and softly to apply the emergency brake (parking brake). Using the emergency brake should only be done as a last resort because it can cause your car to skid or lose control.
  5. Pump the brakes: Pressing the brakes hard and quickly can help build up some brake pressure, depending on the type of braking system your car has. This method sometimes works to bring back some braking ability.
  6. Look for an escape route: Look around you for places where you might be able to stop your car safely, including a broad sidewalk, an empty parking lot, or a side road. Try to converge and get a move into the correct lane while using your turn signals to show what you want to do.
  7. Use friction to slow down: If there are no other options, carefully use the surroundings to slow down your car. You can gently rub the side of your vehicle against a barrier or curb to reduce speed. Be cautious as this method can cause damage to your vehicle.
  8. Communicate with emergency services: If you are unable to bring the vehicle to a stop safely, call emergency services (such as 911) to inform them about your situation. They can provide guidance and assistance.
